In an X-ray apparatus wherein an X-ray tube 8 is connected to the alternating current supply 4 by means of a highvoltage transformer 5 the voltage peaks during the negative half cycles of the supply are reduced by the provision of an element such as a rectifier 6 shunted by an impedance 7 of the non-linear type. The impedance 7 may be a silicon carbide element or a glow discharge tube.
