titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to storage water heaters
abstract 821,032. Burners. FLAVEL & CO. Ltd., S. Jan. 21, 1957 [Jan. 20, 1956], No. 2068/56. Class 75(1) [Also in Group XII] A water heater comprises a water chamber 3 having a flue 2 extending vertically therethrough so as to define a water space 1 surrounding the flue, a main vapour burner 14 located in a burner chamber 13 arranged below the water chamber 3, a thermostat responsive to the temperature of the water and controlling a valve 38 adapted to cut off the oil flow to the burner when a predetermined temperature has been reached and to restore the oil flow as a result of a fall in temperature, and a continuously operating pilot burner 28 supplied by a by-pass to the control valve 38 and adapted to ignite the main burner 14. The water chamber 3 is defined by a cylindrical shell having a domed top 4 and a domed bottom 6 secured to the shell above its lower edge. The flue 2 passes through central apertures in the top and bottom of the cylindrical shell and is provided with an apertured domed baffle plate 43; a closed cylindrical member 44 extends downwardly through the flue. The flue 2 and cylindrical shell 3 are galvanized and the walls of the water space 1 may be glass lined. The top 4 of the cylindrical shell has an aperture 8 for an expansion pipe and a socket 10 for an electrical immersion heater 11. The lower part of the cylindrical shell 3 forms the burner chamber and has an opening giving access to the main burner 14. The latter comprises a perforated cylindrical casing 25 having a recessed base 26 with a short draught tube 27 extending upwardly therefrom. The pilot burner 28 comprises an outer perforated frusto-conical shell 29 seated in the recess in the base 26 of the main burner 14 and a perforated inner shell 30 suspended by a spider 31 from the top of the outer shell. The oil is supplied by a pipe 37 to the inside of the outer shell 29 of the pilot burner and burns at the top of the outer shell. When the amount of oil fed to the pilot burner exceeds its consumption surplus oil flows from the pilot burner into the main burner and burns therein. A dished annulus 35 is secured to the upper end of the main burner and also by spacer bolts to a plate 21 bolted to an annular flange 24 secured to the water chamber 3. The pilot burner is ignited by introducing a lighter through a tube normally closed by a plug. The control valve 38 is located in a small housing 55 mounted on the outside of a rectangular casing 52 surrounding the cylindrical shell 3 and can be adjusted by a hand knob. The thermostat is fitted in a socket 20 in the cylindrical shell 3. The flue 2 is connected at its upper end to a T-piece 46 the transverse head 47 of which is connected at one end to a chimney. The other end of the head 47 is closed by a plate 50 pivoted about a horizontal axis spaced below the horizontal diameter of the plate. Two weights 51 are provided one on each side, of the plate and one being mounted on a screw-threaded spindle so as to be adjustable. A removable or fixed oil tank may be provided internally or externally of the outer casing 52. A temperature indicator 56 is provided on the outer casing 52. The latter is provided with a door and may have adjustable feet. A packing of fibre glass is provided between the cylindrical shell 3 and the outer casing 52. Specifications 786,053 and 792,318 are referred to.
