abstract | 830,029. Stuffing-box substitutes. MORGAN CONSTRUCTION CO. July 24, 1958, No. 23841/58. Class 122 (5). A resilient seal 10 for the neck bearing 11 of a roll 14 used in a rolling mill comprises a tubular body 52, an annular sealing flange 57 extending into contact with a T-ring 42 having an annular flange 45, a flinger 54 and a flange 61 resiliently held in contact with the neck 13 of the roll by a garter spring 64. The seal 10 of a rubber-like material such as neoprene, is sealed with the neck by the flange 61 and a second flange 59 and, by the frictional grip of the two flanges aided by the garter spring 64, is caused to rotate with the roll. The seal is located with its end surface 53 in contact with a rotatable bearing sleeve 21 and with the flinger 54 directed towards an annular chamber 49 formed by the association of bearing-housing ports 22, 23, 25, 26. The flange 57 engages with a flange 43 of the T-ring and thereby prevents oil fed to bearing surfaces 24 from escaping; the oil, which is fed under pressure to the bearing surfaces, is deflected by the flinger 54 into the chamber 49 to be drained away through a port 51. In order to prevent water, used during the rolling process, from entry into the lubricating oil, the seal 10 is provided with a second sealing flange 58 engaging a flange 44 of the T-ring, the two sealing flanges 57, 58 are lubricated by oil or grease pumped into a groove 46 in the part 26 and, through holes 47, 48 into the space formed between the sealing flanges and the flange 45; the clearance between the inner diameter of the latter flange and the seal 10 provides an additional seal of a labyrinth form. The entry of water into the bearing is further prevented by a rubbing- collar type seal ring 31 which is urged into contact with the end face 15 of the roll 14 by spaced springs 33 and sealed with the part 26 by a flexible sleeve 35 of a rubber-like material, such as a neoprene-coated fabric. Specification 398,332 is referred to. |
