titleOfInvention Method of and means for protecting and mounting panels in building construction
abstract 840,864. Walls etc.; building panels; glazing. SOC. DE TRANSFORMATIONS ET D' APPLICATIONS MODERNES A L'INDUSTRIE ET AU COMMERCE T.R.A.M.I.C.O. March 7, 1958 [March 7, 1957], No. 7341/58. Classes 20(3), 20(4), and 87(1) The edges of a corrugated panel, e.g. of fibrous cement or glass, are protected by applying to an undulated edge of the panel a channel 2 and interposing under compression a packing of resilient material between the side faces of the panel and the flanges of the channel, the lengthwise direction of the channel being brought during application of the channel into desired angular position with respect to the lengthwise direction of the panel at right-angles to the edge receiving the channel. As shown in Fig. 1, the' inner faces of the packings 3, 4 have corrugations corresponding to those of the panel, and the packings during assembly thereof are caused to expand under the edge of the panel. The channel 2 has one flange bent as at 8 to form a gutter and a flashing 10, the latter being located on a support plate 13 carried by a structural member 12; the plate 13 has an inclined flange 14 to throw water clear of the member 12, and condensation collecting in the gutter passes through holes 17 to the flange. The upper edge 19 of a panel is received in a channel having an upwardly bent flange 20 secured to the member 12. In modifications (a) the flange 20 projects rearwardly of the panel, and (b) the channel 2, Fig. 3, at the lower edge of the panel has a downward flange 9a clamped between an angle 10a, adjustably fixed on the member 12d, and a plate 12b secured, before or after fitting the panel, to the member; the channel 2 at the upper edge 19b of the panel is disposed between flanges 20c, 20d to allow for expansion and contraction of the panel. Apparatus for applying the channel 2 to a panel comprises a table 22, Figs., 6, 7, having a raised edge against which an edge of a panel 24 is applied, and a member 25 forming a base for a panel-clamping part 26 movable by screws 27. The member is provided with horizontal projections 29 carrying a plate 30 at the middle of which is a lever 32 and cam 33 for displacing vertically a transverse member 34 carrying a protecting channel 35 and so that one of the packings 3 is compressed while the other packing 4 is inserted between the panel and other flange of the channel.
