titleOfInvention Improvements relating to nuclear reactors
abstract 862,145. Controlling nuclear reactors. VITRO CORPORATION OF AMERICA. Feb. 24, 1959, No. 6409/59. Class 39(4). A nuclear reactor is controlled solely by controlling its temperature. Neutron leakage and other effects give it a negative temperature coefficient of reactivity, and the excess reactivity is such that the reactivity falls to zero at a fairly low temperature. This limiting temperature may be below room temperature, so that the reactor must be cooled in order to work, or it may be a little above room temperature, in which case a heater is used to shut down the reactor. The Figures show a water moderated and reflected reactor having radial plates 21 of a mixture of 90%-enriched UO 2 and Al clad in Al mounted on a hollow post 22. The post contains plates 25 of fuel or absorber which are used to adjust the reactivity to the desired value at the last stage of construction, or after prolonged burn-up. A cooling jacket 27 is provided through which is circulated water to cool and control the reactor. Moderators other than water, e.g. D 2 O, graphite, or organic liquids, may be used. Specification 817,751 is referred to.
