titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to ferromagnetic ferrite materials
abstract 880,865. Magnetic compositions. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. April 16, 1958 [April 18, 1957], No. 12163/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 38 (2). A ferromagnetic material comprises AO, 2-21 mol. per cent; MeO, 5-45 mol. per cent; Fe 2 Og, 52-83 mol. per cent, where A is at least one of bivalent metals Ba, Sr, Pb, Ca, and Me is at least one of the bivalent metals Fe, Mn, Co, Ni, Zn, Mg, Cu, or and exhibits at least two ferromagnetic crystal phases selected from the cubic crystal structure of spinel and hexagonal crystal structures of which the a-axis is 5.9 Š and the C-axis is 32.8, 43.5, 52.3, 113.1 or 84.1 Š. Proportions of constituent oxides are stated, which produce materials whose hexagonal crystal phases exhibit preferred planes and preferred directions of magnetization respectively. The former have high initial permeabilities, especially at high frequencies, and associate better with the cubic crystal phase whose properties are normally inferior, and the latter are suitable for permanent magnets and micro-wave equipment. Examples are described of materials made from a mixture of oxides, compounds which convert to oxides when heated or compounds of oxides by processes including at least some of the following steps: milling in ethyl alcohol for 1 hour, presintering in air for 15 hours at 1000 ‹ C., remilling, pressing after adding an organic binder, sintering in air at 1200‹ C. to 1330‹ C. for 2-4 hours, regrinding, pressing after further addition of a binder and resintering in oxygen at 1260‹ C. for 2 hours. The production of compositions containing in addition to Fe 2 O 3 BaO and ZnO, BaO and CoO, BaO, ZnO and CoO are described, their constituent crystal phases stated and the values of permeability and tan 8 for different frequencies tabulated, Starting materials specified are Ba carbonate, Co carbonate, ZnO, Fe 2 O 3 and BaFe 12 O 19 . In some cases values of density are given to show the improvement obtained. The proportions of AO, MeO and Fe 2 O 3 are set out on triaxial diagrams.
