titleOfInvention | Improvements in nuclear reactors |
abstract | 904,608. Reactors. GENERAL DYNAMICS CORPORATION. May 28, 1959 [June 25, 1958], No. 18281/59. Class 39 (4). [Also in Group XXX] The reflector of a nuclear reactor contains a rack in which specimens are irradiated, means for removing specimens from a fixed position in the reflector, and means for moving the rack to bring a desired specimen to the fixed position. Fig. 2 shows a reactor core 21 in an-aluminium tank in a gravel and concrete lined pit. A reflector 27 of graphite, beryllium or beryllia is encased in metal and has an annular recess which holds a rotary specimen rack 28 in a removable container, Fig. 7. The reflector also has a recess at one edge for a large specimen can, and two small irradiation holes; the core contains a central " glory hole" 111 and a pneumatic tube 135. The reflector is carried by aluminium channels on jacks 134. The rack consists of a rotatable metal ring carrying cups 141, some of which are perforated to permit drying of the interior of the rack. A tube 165 contains rods 164 to drive the rack and 165 to lock the rack by means of holes 178 ; specimens are removed or inserted through tube 154. D 2 O or H 2 O is used as top shield moderator and coolant, with natural circulation over pipes 253 which form part of a refrigerating system. Each fuel element 24 has a central fuel part, containing a mixture of fuel, moderator e.g. ZrH, Be, BeO, graphite, strong resonance absorber, e.g. U<SP>238</SP>, Th<SP>232</SP>, and possibly burnable poison, e.g. Sm, between end parts of moderator; the elements are mounted in pierced grid plates and their tops have grooves 55 and spacers 57. Fig. 13 shows groove 55 engaged by a ball lock 265 in a spring-loaded piston inside a weighted tube 261 which slides in a weighted tube 259. Suspension cables 276 are fastened to the tube 261 and a release cable 272 is fastened to the piston ; a switch 280 indicates when the fuel element is correctly placed in the core. Movable fuel hoists are provided. The three control rod assemblies 25, Fig. 10, comprise pierced composite aluminium tubes 70 fastened to the top grid plate 47. Inside the tube a cable supports, through an electromagnet 96, a boron carbide rod 85 which carries a shock-absorbing spring 87 ; the rod may be weighted. Winches for the control rods are mounted on a shelf 36 (Fig. 2) below a top cover ; these and the specimen hoist 207 have conventional servos, limit switches and position indicators. The reactor has a large negative temperature coefficient of reactivity, as described in Specification 852,877. Specifications 904,609 and 904,610 also are referred to. |
