titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to methods of sealing glass exhaust tube of vessels
abstract 905,524. Glass seals. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. June 3, 1959 [June 6, 1958], No. 18964/59. Class 56. The tube 4, connected to a container 7 enclosing a gas at a pressure greater than atmospheric is arranged vertically, contains an internal glaze of low melting point glass and is sealed by heating so that this glass runs down within the tube as a thickening ring 6 to close the tube at 8. This may be done by moving a burner 10 slowly downwards from a position I to a position II. The sealing glass is chosen so that the tube is not softened. Two examples of possible compositions for the tube are given. One consists predominantly of oxides of Si, Pb with smaller quantities of oxides of Na, K, Al, Sb and Mn. Another consists predominantly of oxides of Si and Na with smaller quantities of Ca, K, Mg, Al. The sealing glass consists of lead oxide with smaller quantities of oxides of B and Zn.
