abstract | 911,949. Explosive and propellent compositions. NITROGLYCERIN A.B. Oct. 30, 1959 [Oct. 31, 1958; Dec. 4, 1958], No. 36937/59. Class 9 (2). An explosive or propellent composition comprises a mixture of inorganic nitrate treated with a coating of a surface-active organic amine having at least 6 carbon atoms in an alkyl group in an amount of 0.001 to 1.5 g. per 100 g. of the nitrate, and a combustible material. Specified amines are hexadecylamine, octadecylamine, dodecylamine, stearylamine, stearylamine acetate, stearyldimethylamine, oleylamine, hexadecylamine chloride, hexadecylamine acetate, isopropylamine lauryl sulphate, laurylamine and C 18 H 37 NH(CH 2 ) 3 NH 2 . The preferred quantity is about 0.1%. Preferably the amine is added to the crystallized nitrate at a temperature higher than the melting-point of the amine and then the salt is allowed to cool with stirring; the amine may also be added to a solution or a melt of ammonium nitrate. The mix may also contain a sensitizer such as nitroglycerine, nitroglycol or nitrated hydrocarbons such as nitrotoluene; a carbonaceous fuel such as coal, paraffin, wood flour, or a finely-divided combustible powder such as aluminium, ferrosilicon, or silicon. In a typical example (No. 1), a dynamite consists of nitroglycerine 24.1%, nitroglycol 11.8%, ammonium nitrate with a surface coating of 0.16% of dodecylamine, 54.4%, nitrated toluene 6.0%, nitrocotton 1.4% wood flour 2.1%, and chalk 0.2%. |
