titleOfInvention | Resinous composition |
abstract | Resin compositions comprise (1) an interpolymer of a polymerizable unsaturated carboxylic acid amide and at least one other monomer containing a CH2=C< group, said interpolymer having amido hydrogen atoms replaced by the structure <FORM:0917881/IV(a)/1> where R is hydrogen or a saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon radical containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms and R1 is hydrogen or an alkyl radical containing 1 to 8 carbon atoms and (2) a polymer of an unsaturated aliphatic alcohol or an adduct of a polymer containing free hydroxyl groups and an anhydride of a dicarboxylic acid. Specified amides are acrylamide, methacrylamide, itaconic acid amide, alpha-ethyl acrylamide, crotonamide, maleic and fumaric acid diamides, maleuric acid and N-carbamyl maleimide. Specified comonomers are styrene, alpha-chlorostyrene, vinyl esters, and unsaturated acids, esters and nitriles. The preferred aldehyde is formaldehyde, and etherification of the products may be effected with methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, pentanol, octanol, decanol or benzyl alcohol. Specified alcohol polymers are polymers of allyl alcohol, methallyl alcohol, allyl carbinol, beta-allyl-ethyl alcohol, methyl vinyl carbinol, vinyl ethyl carbinol and methyl allyl carbinol, and copolymers thereof with monomers containing CH2=C< groups, particularly styrene and acrylonitrile. Polymers suitable for forming adducts include the above specified alcohol polymers; vinyl alcohol polymers; hydroxyl modified vinyl halide polymers, e.g. obtained by hydrolysing copolymers of vinyl chloride or vinyl bromide with vinyl acetate, propionate or butyrate; polyesters, e.g. obtained by reacting ethylene glycol, propylene glycol or diethylene glycol with adipic, succinic, maleic, fumaric, phthalic, isophthalic or tetrachlorophthalic acids; polyethers, e.g. prepared by reacting sucrose, sorbitol or glycerol with ethylene oxide, propylene oxide or butylene oxide; epoxide resins, e.g. prepared by reacting epichlorhydrin with bis(4-hydroxyphenyl) 2,2-propane; and hydroxyl-containing silicon-containing polymers. Adducts may be formed with maleic, succinic, phthalic or itaconic anhydrides. The compositions may also contain other resins, e.g. epoxide resins, vinyl resins, alkyd resins, epoxidized oils, urea-formaldehyde resins, melamine-formaldehyde resins, nitrocellulose, polyolefin resins, phenolic resins and silicone resins; pigments, e.g. titanium dioxide and carbon black; germicides; fillers; stabilizers; driers and antifoaming agents; and may be used to form coating compositions which give heat curable coatings. Examples describe the preparation of interpolymers of (A) styrene, ethyl acrylate, acrylamide and acrylic acid and (B) styrene, acrylamide and methacrylic acid, modified with formaldehyde and butanol; and of compositions comprising (A) and (I) styrene-allyl alcohol copolymer; (II and IV) styrene-allyl alcohol copolymers and epoxy resins; (III) polyallyl alcohol; and (VII) a maleic anhydride adduct of a styrene-allyl alcohol copolymer; and of compositions comprising (V) (A) and (VI) (B) with adducts of maleic anhydride with allyl alcohol-styrene copolymers, a sucrose-ethylene oxide condensate, a styrene-allyl alcohol-acrylonitrile terpolymer and a glycerin-propylene oxide condensate; and succinic anhydride with a styrene-allyl alcohol copolymer. Specification 826,652 is referred to. |
