titleOfInvention Impact tools
abstract 942,909. Hammers. HERNE HILL ENGINEERS Ltd. April 30, 1962 [May 9, 1961], No. 16336/62. Heading B4C. An impact tool, such as a hammer, comprises a tubular head 3 having closed ends 4, 5 and an auxiliary member slidably mounted within the head, the space between one end of the auxiliary member and the internal surface of the end of the head defining the impact face being at least partially filled with shockabsorbing liquid. The head of the hammer is formed from two tubular parts of cast or nickel steel each open at one end and having an impact face 4, 5 at the other end, the two parts being mounted in a sleeve 2 and welded therein. The auxiliary member 6 is of hexagonal form and mounted, before welding, within the part 3, springs 9, 10 being provided to cushion the movement of the member 6. The shockabsorbing liquid, such as oil, may be admitted into the interior of the head via a hole 7 which is sealed by a plug 8, the oil additionally damping the movement of the member 6. The oil travels from one end to the other via the spaces formed by the flats on the hexagon; alternatively, an axial hole may be formed in the member.
