titleOfInvention Process for the production of polyolefins and catalyst therefor
abstract A compound of a metal of sub-groups A of Group 4-6 of the Periodic System is prepared by reducing a metal compound with an alkyl aluminium halide in an inert liquid medium at -100 DEG to 0 DEG C. Thus, TiCl3 is made from TiCl4 with diethyl aluminium chloride, bromide or fluoride or with aluminium sesquichloride; and TiBr3 from TiBr4 with diethyl aluminium chloride. Preferred liquid media are propylene trimer and diesel oil (b.p. 120-190 DEG C.).ALSO:Crystalline polymers of olefins of the general formula CH2=CHR wherein R is H, or aliphatic hydrocarbon group (up to C8) or an aromatic group, are produced by effecting the polymerization in presence of an aluminium alkyl halide and a lower valency Group 4A-6A metal compound (the latter being a precipitate obtained from a higher valency compound by reduction with an alkyl aluminium halide in an inert liquid medium at -100 to 0 DEG C. and which is thoroughly washed before use). The preparation of polypropylene is exemplified.
