abstract | The ammonium nitrate constituent of an explosive or propellent composition has a surface coating of a guanidine or hydrazine derivative having at least one hydrophobic alkyl group with at least 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl group in an amount of at least 1 mg. of coating per 100 gms. of ammonium nitrate. The coating compounds specified are octadecylguanidine, octadecylcarbamylguanidine, stearoyl hydroxide, mono-octadecylhydrazine, and di-octadecylhydrazine. Coating is effected at above the melting-point of the coating compound and then the ammonium nitrate is allowed to cool with stirring. Part of the ammonium nitrate may be replaced by sodium nitrate. Plastic explosives are made by suspending the coated ammonium nitrate in a solution of cellulose nitrate either in a mixture of glycerine trinitrate and ethylene glycol dinitrate or in nitrobenzene. In examples, other ingredients of the explosives are trinitrotoluene, mononitrotoluene, aluminium powder, wood flour, and calcium carbonate. Other constituents mentioned are coal, silicon, and ferrosilicon. |
