titleOfInvention Treatment of solutions of olefin polymers
abstract Catalyst residues are removed from olefin polymers by dissolving the polymer in an inert organic solvent, treating the solution with a water-soluble monohydric alcohol containing dissolved therein an acid which yields water soluble reaction products with the catalyst residues, thereby forming a two-phase liquid system in which the inert organic solvent phase contains dissolved olefin polymer, and the alcohol phase contains catalyst residues, and washing the two-phase system with an agent consisting predominantly of water, e.g. steam plus a small proportion of ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid. The polymer may be recovered from the organic solvent phase by conventional techniques. The alcohol may be methanol or isopropanol. The acid is generally hydrochloric, hydrobromic, hydriodic, nitric, acetic, propionic, butyric, or benzoic. The catalyst residues removed are of the Zeigler-type. The polymers recovered, in the examples are poly-butadiene, and copolymers of ethylene and propylene.
