titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to vapour-phase catalytic reactions |
abstract | 966,993. Catalytic reactions. BADGER CO. Inc. March 1, 1961 [March 3, 1960], No. 7442/61. Heading B1F. In carrying out a vapour-phase fluidized-bed catalytic reaction, a stream containing reactant vapours is successively passed upwards through (a) a first dense-phase bed 14 of catalyst particles maintained in a turbulent fluidized state while controlling the temperature within this bed to promote the reaction, (b) a dilute-phase bed 26, (c) a second dense-phase bed of catalyst 28 while controlling the temperature within this bed to have a value below that in 14. The catalyst in 28 is removed and returned to 14 when 28 exceeds a predetermined depth using a pipe 42 which is made operative in one direction only with baffle 44, i.e. for transferring catalyst from 28 to 14. A means of controlling the temperature in both dense-phase beds is provided in the coils 24 and 32. The aerial oxidation of naphthalene or o-xylene to phthalic anhydride using vanadium pentoxide as catalyst is described. |
