titleOfInvention High pressure processes and pressure treated products
abstract Physical properties, including creep resistance and hardness, of silicon bodies, are modified by encasing a body in a jacket of a material of higher compressibility, applying a sufficiently high pressure for sufficient time to cause the encased body at least to reach its dislocation alteration threshold (defined), and removing encasing material. The encasing materials may have abrupt densification points below the final pressure applied to the assembly: such materials are bismuth and a Bi-Pb-Sn alloy melting at 203 DEG F. (which can be removed by melting), cerium, barium and antimony. In an example, described with respect to an encased iron body, hydrostatic pressures of 28,000-35,000 at. were applied.
