abstract A process for preparing a salt of 3-thienyl malonic acid useful as an intermediate in the production of certain thienylpenicillins. The process comprises hydrolysing a 3-thienyl cyanoacetate with an alkali metal hydroxide, isolating the salt of 3-thienyl malonic acid which forms and converting the salt to 3-thienyl malonic acid.
