The method configures a mobile switching center (MSC) to route the selected voice message to a multiport protocol converter (MPPC) that transmits the selected data message on the selected voice channel. Thereafter, the selected data message is received at the communication device. An apparatus for data communication in or for a wireless communication network for transmitting and receiving forward and reverse voice, traffic and control channel messages using the disclosed method is disclosed.
