abstract PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for catalytic reduction of an oligosaccharide and to provide a reduced oligosaccharide prepared thereby. A method for reducing a mixture of a plurality of malto-oligosaccharide species to essentially zero DE, comprising the steps of: wherein the plurality of malto-oligosaccharide species differ in at least the DP value; Said method thereby determining the DP profile of said mixture: providing said malto-oligosaccharide mixture; and hydrogenation conditions suitable for maintaining said mixture of malto-oligosaccharide species substantially to maintain the DP profile of said mixture. Under a catalytic hydrogenation step, wherein the catalytic hydrogenation is performed at a pressure of at least about 1500 psi.
