abstract An image processing system and method, comprising a registration processor that calculates a statistical metric of likelihood of two stereoscopic images based on the assumption that the two images have a probabilistic relationship. The likelihood is calculated using the mutation probabilities (calculated from known knowledge of image relationships or purely predicted from the image data) for some or all of the voxel pairs in the overlapping volumes. Is calculated. The likelihood is repeatedly calculated for a plurality of transforms until a transform that maximizes the likelihood is found. Optimal registration is performed by the transform that maximizes the likelihood, and the parameters of the optimized transform are output to the memory, and the display system is used to synthesize and display the image. The interpretation of the optimized likelihood is simple and straightforward, and also indicates the registration quality.
