A method for detecting a passing magnetic article, comprising an initial step of sensing an ambient magnetic field and generating a voltage Vsig proportional to the magnetic field. The threshold voltage that occurs is expressed as a percentage of the peak-to-peak voltage of Vsig. The method further includes generating a detector output voltage that rises to one binary level when Vsig rises and exceeds a threshold voltage, and to the other binary level when Vsig falls below the threshold voltage. .
