The present invention provides a novel process for producing (7-methoxy-1-naphthyl) acetonitrile useful as an intermediate of pharmaceutical agomelatine. 7-Methoxy-1-tetralone is reacted with cyanoacetic acid in the presence of a catalyst to obtain a compound of formula (VII). The reaction is then carried out with a hydrogenation catalyst in the presence of an allyl compound to give a compound of formula (I). [Selection figure] None |
