abstract An object of the present invention is to suppress the deterioration of emissions and the deterioration of performance under operating conditions where the combustion temperature becomes high. The internal combustion engine is a reciprocating internal combustion engine having a water injection valve. Then, water is supplied from the water injection valve 3 to the combustion chamber 1b. The timing for injecting water from the water injection valve 3 is a period in which the timing for opening the intake valve 8i and the timing for closing the exhaust valve 8e overlap. By injecting water from the water injection valve 3 during the overlap period, the combustion chamber 1b of the internal combustion engine 1 is cooled, and the injected water flows into the exhaust system of the internal combustion engine 1 to cool the exhaust.
