The present invention relates to a technique for improving the bending strength of a thin glass substrate suitably used for a thin display or the like, and to provide means for improving the bending strength of a glass substrate on which a film layer made of an inorganic substance is formed. A method for improving the bending strength of a substrate by forming a film layer by applying and solidifying a silica sol obtained by hydrolysis and polycondensation of a silica precursor onto a glass substrate having a thickness of 200 μm or less. The silica precursor comprises a tetrafunctional silica precursor and a trifunctional silica precursor, and the glass substrate surface is chemically etched before applying the silica sol to the glass substrate.
