PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an aromatic polyimide with a high yield in a short time. SOLUTION: An acid dianhydride represented by the following general formula (1) and a diamine represented by the following general formula (2) are subjected to dehydration condensation in the presence of an ionic liquid, and represented by the general formula (3). A method for producing an aromatic polyimide, comprising producing an aromatic polyimide. [Chemical 1] (In the formula, Ar is a tetravalent organic group having at least one aromatic ring.)
