abstract |
A process for the preparation of citalopram and its pharmaceutically acceptable salts is described. It is obtained starting from 5-cyanophthalide by reaction with a mixture of 4-fluorophenyl magnesium halide and 3-dimethylaminopropyl magnesium halide. The resulting intermediate is shown below, where X is a halogen, preferably chlorine or bromine, which is cyclized without isolation. |
