abstract An optical bistable Raman laser is disclosed that provides digital signal reproduction, reconstruction, and waveform conversion. An apparatus according to aspects of the present invention has an optical waveguide (119) provided in a semiconductor material (121). The first and second reflectors (103, 105) are disposed in the optical waveguide. The first and second reflectors define a cavity in the optical waveguide. The cavity is present for receiving a first optical beam (109) having a first wavelength (lambda e). The power level of the first optical beam received by the cavity rising above the second power level means that the power level of the first optical beam received by the cavity is the first power level. This results in the emission of the second optical beam (111) until it falls lower. The first power level is less than the second power level. [Selection] Figure 1
