abstract The present invention relates to an optical pumping device (12). The device (12) comprises at least one thin layer (13) having a predetermined volume formed on the basis of an active material doped with laser ions. The apparatus (12) also includes at least one pump beam (19) having a cross-section of a predetermined dimension and a wavelength selected so that laser ions of the active material can be excited. The pump beam is incident on the incident point (47) of the layer (13) at an incident angle (θ p ) to form at least one optical gain region (20) in the layer (13). This region (20) has a volume less than the volume of the layer (13) and a position in the layer (13), the volume and position of which is the dimension of the cross section of the incident point (47), pump beam (19). And the angle of incidence (θ p ).
