abstract The present invention provides a separation membrane having a separation layer whose pore diameter is controlled with high accuracy, and a production method capable of producing the separation membrane with a high level of reproducibility. The separation membrane has a support and a separation layer formed by colloidal gel or polymer gel obtained by baking colloidal sol or polymer sol, and forms a separation layer. The pore diameter of the separation layer is controlled by adjusting the size of the gel space. As the colloidal gel or polymer gel, one containing a polymer of an organosilicon compound having a structure in which the size of the gel space can be adjusted or a polymer having a cyclic siloxane structure containing a Si—O bond is used.
