abstract A package structure and a method for packaging an interferometric modulator. An interferometric modulator 830 is formed on an upper portion of a transparent substrate 810. The backplane 820 is bonded to the transparent substrate 810 using a seal 840, and the interferometric modulator is exposed to the surrounding environment through an opening 850 in the backplane or seal. After bonding the transparent substrate and the backplane and incorporating the desired desiccant, release material, and / or self-aligning monolayer into the package structure 800, the opening is sealed.
