The present invention provides a liquid crystal display device that can easily prevent a display defect after display starts with low power consumption. In a liquid crystal display panel, a counter electrode is provided on a substrate facing a substrate on which a pixel electrode and a common electrode for driving liquid crystal are formed, out of a pair of substrates sandwiching a liquid crystal layer. Then, a voltage is applied to the counter electrode 52 by the display driving unit 102. At this time, application of a voltage to the counter electrode 53 is started with the start of display, and when a predetermined voltage application time has elapsed from the start of display, application of the voltage to the counter electrode 53 is stopped and the counter electrode is stopped.
