A combustion chamber (10) for burning solid fuel having a high volatile content comprises a cylindrical wall section (12) and a top section (13) arranged at the end (14) of the cylindrical wall section (12). A hollow body (11). The hollow body (11) has a primary air inlet (20), a fuel inlet (23), and four volatile outlets (one shown) mounted therein. Each volatile outlet (25) has a plurality of holes (26) of different sizes arranged in the plate (27). In use, the burning volatiles exit the holes (26) in turbulent flow, resulting in efficient combustion of the volatiles. In addition, a heat transfer surface (33) on the water jacket (32) is shaped around the combustion chamber (10) to define a passageway (34) between the heat transfer surface and the combustion chamber. This arrangement results in efficient transfer of heat from turbulent volatiles that are circulated around the passageway (34). |
