An estrogenic extract of the leguminous family barnacle is provided. Also provided are methods of using the extract to achieve an estrogenic effect, particularly in humans, eg, human women. In some embodiments, the method includes treatment of menopausal symptoms. In some embodiments, the method includes treatment of estrogen receptor positive cancer, such as estrogen responsive breast cancer, and in some embodiments, the method includes treatment or prevention of osteoporosis.
