| abstract | A method for producing isobutanol is disclosed. In one embodiment, the method comprises providing a microorganism transformed with an isobutanol production pathway that contains at least one foreign gene. The microorganism is selected to produce isobutanol from a carbon source in a yield of at least 10 percent of the theoretical yield. The method includes culturing the microorganism in a medium containing a feedstock that provides a carbon source until isobutanol is produced. The method includes recovering isobutanol. In one embodiment, the microorganism is a yeast having a Crabtree negative phenotype. In another embodiment, the microorganism is a yeast microorganism having a Crabtree positive phenotype. Microorganisms that produce isobutanol have been disclosed. In one embodiment, the microorganism comprises an isobutanol production pathway containing at least one foreign gene so as to produce a recoverable amount of isobutanol from a carbon source in a yield of at least 10 percent of theoretical yield.
