titleOfInvention | Modified annexin protein and method for preventing thrombosis |
abstract | A method for preventing thrombosis without increasing bleeding is provided. A method using a modified annexin protein, preferably annexin V. Annexin binds to phosphatidylserine on the outer surface of the cell membrane, thereby preventing the binding of the prothrombinase complex necessary for thrombus formation. However, annexins do not affect the platelet aggregation required for hemostasis. The modified annexin molecule can also be an annexin homodimer, an annexin molecule coupled to one or more polyethylene glycol chains, or an annexin molecule coupled to another protein. By increasing the molecular weight of the annexin, a modified annexin is made and remains in circulation for a time sufficient to provide a sustained therapeutic effect. [Selection figure] None |
