In a power converter, a switching loss is reduced and a motor loss is also reduced. In order to control the switching operation of the switching element based on the AC magnetic flux ripple converted from the DC power and the magnetic pole position signal of the motor, a driving signal is supplied from the driving circuit to the switching element. The conduction or blocking operation is performed in association with the magnetic pole position of the motor. With such a configuration and operation, the number of switching operations of the switching element per unit time or the number of switching operations per cycle of AC power can be reduced as compared with a general PWM system. Moreover, in the said structure, although the switching frequency of the switching element of a power switching circuit is reduced, the loss of a motor can be suppressed and there exists an effect which can also reduce the inverter loss accompanying switching operation.
