abstract |
An improved system for biological production of carotenoids is provided. The present invention provides oleaginous fungi (such as yeast or other unicellular fungi) that produce one or more carotenoids. The present invention also uses methods of constructing such yeasts and fungi, methods of using such yeasts and fungi to produce carotenoids, and carotenoids produced in such oily yeasts or fungi. And a method for producing a carotenoid-containing composition such as a food or feed additive or a dietary supplement. In particular, the present invention includes one or more oleaginic agents that do not include modifications, but otherwise enhance oleaginity and / or change carotenoid production capacity compared to the same organism.
