abstract | Disclosed is a method of stabilizing collagen fibrils in the extracellular matrix of cellular tissues, particularly the Bluff membrane, and stabilizing the retinal pigment epithelial cells of the Bruch membrane. Stabilization and organization are affected by treating cellular tissue with proteins that cross-link and organize collagen fibrils, such as decorin. Stabilization and organization methods can be used before, during, or after diagnosis of dry macular degeneration to prevent, retard or limit the progression of Bruch's membrane and Bruch's retinal pigment epithelial cell decay.
