Provided are a polarizing plate having a small retardation even when a film in which a transparent protective film and a hydrophilic polymer coating film are laminated is stretched and having excellent optical characteristics, and a method for producing the same. In a polarizing plate in which a base film and a coating film of a hydrophilic polymer are integrally stretched in a laminated form and the hydrophilic polymer layer is dyed with a dichroic dye, the base film is stretched. Even if it forms with the thermoplastic resin which can reduce retardation, a base film layer is made to function as a transparent protective film. The thermoplastic resin uses a diol component of the formula (1).
