Articles and methods of forming articles are disclosed. The article has a surface comprising a nanostructured ferrite alloy. The surface includes a plurality of nanofeatures including a complex oxide of yttrium and titanium disposed in an iron-containing alloy matrix. The iron-containing alloy matrix at the surface includes from about 5 weight percent to about 30 weight percent chromium and from about 0.1 weight percent to about 10 weight percent molybdenum. Further, the concentration of chi-phase or sigma phase in the nanostructured ferrite alloy at the surface is less than about 5 volume percent. The method generally includes grinding, thermomechanically solidifying, annealing, and then cooling at a rate that prevents formation of chi and sigma phases in the nanostructured ferrite alloy at the surface. .
