Treatment and diagnostic methods are provided, which relate to the induction of calreticulin expression on phagocytes. Specifically, the method relates to macrophage-mediated programmed cell removal (PrCR), wherein the method increases PrCR by contacting a phagocyte with a toll-like receptor (TLR) agonist, or Downregulating PrCR by contacting the cell with breton tyrosine kinase (BTK). In some embodiments, an activator of TLR signaling or a BTK agonist is provided in combination with CD47 blockade. |
