abstract A water repellent and a coloring method for easily adjusting the degree of coloring of a specific part of a medium are provided. The water-repellent agent has a bond part for forming a bond with the surface of the media, and is a linear hydrocarbon moiety having the longest chain length counted from the carbon bonded to the bond part. A substituted or unsubstituted chain hydrocarbon compound having 7 to 100 carbon atoms is contained as an active ingredient. The method of coloring the media is based on the application process in which this water repellent is applied to a part of the media and the degree of coloration in the application area of the media where the water repellent is applied. In order to make it different from the coloring degree of an application area | region, the contact process which makes a medium contact with a coloring liquid with the coloring liquid temperature and / or contact time according to the coloring degree of an application area | region is provided.
