The method is the following steps, ie -Steps (100) of determining at least one operating time limit ( TFPPI ) for long-term low-power operation of a low-power nuclear reactor so as to avoid destruction of at least one of the coatings. − Step (102) to operate the nuclear reactor at low power for a real time strictly shorter than the time limit ( TFPPI ), and − Includes step (104) of relaxing at least one threshold for protecting a nuclear power plant as a function of the difference between the time limit ( TFPPI ) and real time.
