PURPOSE: To advantageously obtain a ≥2C hydrocarbon, by bringing a methane- containing gas at a specific temperature into contact with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst consisting of single crystal high-purity ultrafine powdery magnesium oxide prepared by a vapor-phase oxidation method and alkaline metal oxide. n CONSTITUTION: A methane-containing gas at 500W1,500°C is brought into contact with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst to produce a ≥2C hydrocarbon. In the process, a readily available and relatively inexpensive catalyst, consisting of (a) single crystal high-purity ultrafine powdery magnesium oxide prepared by a vapor-phase oxidation method, (b) an alkaline metal oxide and, as necessary, further (c) one or more metallic element oxides of atomic Nos.21 (Sc)W30 (Zn) or atomic Nos.57 (La)W71 (Lu) capable of assuming a valence of +2W3 with a hardly any amount of supported metallic elements is used to advantageously afford the aimed compound at a reaction temperature as low as preferably 500W800°C with a high methane conversion rate, selectively for 2C (ethylene and ethane) and space time yield of the 2C and a long catalyst life. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1989,JPO&Japio |
