Method for synthesizing hydrocarbon from carbon dioxide using water as reducing agent |
abstract |
PURPOSE:To reduce CO2 with water at ordinary temperature and synthesize a hydrocarbon, such as methane and ethane, by suspending TiO2 carrying platinum in water and irradiating the suspension with light at a specific wavelength. CONSTITUTION:TiO2 carrying 1-5wt.% platinum is suspended in water and the suspension is irradiated with light at >=310nm (which may be artificial light or sunrays) to afford methane and ethane from the CO2 and water at ambient temperature. The TiO2 is preferably the anatase type having high photoconductivity and large surface area. Reutilization of CO2 produced by burning fossil fuels or calcining cement as methane and ethane with the inexpensive light and water is significant as one solution to environmental problems on the global scale. |
