titleOfInvention Manufacture of raw material pitch for isotropic carbon fiber precursor
abstract PURPOSE: To obtain the title raw material pitch which can reduce the time required to make it infusible and can give carbon fiber having improved strength, by incorporat ing a polyfunctional high-molecular compound into an optically isotropic raw material pitch for isotropic carbon fiber precursor, and thermally reacting the mixture. n CONSTITUTION: A polyfunctional high-molecular compound (e.g., PVC) is incorporated into a substantially optically isotropic raw material pitch (preferably a coal-base or petroleum-base raw material pitch) for isotropic carbon fiber precursor, and the formed mixture is thermally reacted preferably at 150-450°C for 5min-5hr, thus giving the title raw material pitch. By this technique, the content of benzene-insolubles in the raw material pitch can be selectively increased without increasing the content of pyridine-insolubles therein so that the strength of carbon fiber obtained therefrom can be improved without any adverse effect on the spinnability; the oxidation reactivity of a modified raw material pitch can be improved to reduce the time required to make it infusible so that the productivity can be improved to realize a reduction in manufacturing cost; in addition, since conventional equipment can be used as it is, a raw material pitch can be easily modified at low cost. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1989,JPO&Japio
