abstract | PURPOSE: To obtain a good contact and excellent reproduced envelope by forming a fine particle coating layer containing a coarse particle layer on both ends or one end of the width of a tape on a polymer film and providing a ferromagnetic metal film thereon. n CONSTITUTION: The fine particle coating layer 6 consisting of the coarse particle layer 7 on which short wavelength recording by a rotary head is not performed and a protrusion layer 8 composed of water-base polymer is formed on the polymer film 5 in the vicinity of both ends or one end in a lateral direction. On the layer 6, the ferromagnetic metal film 9 consisting of Co-Ni or Co-Ti is formed by sputtering. Then a protective lubricating layer 10 consisting of a plasma polymerized film is provided on the film 9 to consititute the recording medium. The layer 7 removes deposites of dropout from the tape or contaminant in air from the step of an alloy composite head.
