abstract PURPOSE: To lengthen the life of a cell by installing an oxygen concentration sensor and a hydrogen concentration sensor in upper cell blocks where oxygen concentration is decreased and lower cell blocks where hydrogen concentration is decreased. n CONSTITUTION: An oxygen concentration sensor 22 is installed in an air inlet manifold 7 of upper cell blocks 1, 2, and a hydrogen concentration sensor 16 is installed in a fuel gas inlet manifold 3 in lower cell blocks 1-(N-1), 1-N. When oxygen concentration or hydrogen concentration detected with the sensor 16 or 22 is lower than each reference value by a specified value, a fuel gas bypass pipeline 12 branched from a fuel gas main supply pipeline 2 or an air bypass pipeline 18 branched from an air main supply pipeline 6 is opened and fuel gas or air is replenished to the cell blocks 1, 2 or 1-(N-1), 1-N. Deviation of hydrogen concentration and that of oxygen concentration in reaction gases in cell stacks are decreased and the cell life is remarkably lengthened. n COPYRIGHT: (C)1991,JPO&Japio
