abstract (57) [Summary] The discharge system of the present invention is useful in chemical analysis for identifying and quantifying gaseous impurities. The system has a pair of electrodes that generate a spark across the gap between the electrodes. The sparks are preferably formed repeatedly. As the inert gas flows between the electrodes, the sparks generate photons that are emitted and utilized as described herein. In another aspect, other particles are excited in the spark gap and subsequently emit energy. Emission of photons or loss of energy aids in the identification and quantification of peaks eluted from a typical gas chromatograph. The preferred inert gas is helium with or without traces of noble gas.
