Electrode-ionization devices with polarity reversal and double reversal and their use |
abstract |
(57) Abstract: An electro-deionization device with a novel polarity reversal protocol designed to provide continuous high quality fluid products is described. The protocol of the present invention involves replacing the recirculating fluid stream established in the ion enrichment compartment with a fluid stream having a lower ion concentration, while retaining the fluid flow through the adjacent ion depletion compartment. Also provided are methods and protocols for improving the ionic composition of the ion exchange material and fluid in the compartment. A flow reversal protocol is also described, during which high quality fluid product is recovered from the apparatus of the present invention. The polarity reversal and flow reversal protocols can each be applied separately, or the flow reversal protocol can be introduced into the sequence of the polarity reversal protocol. The electro-deionization device of the present invention is assembled in a novel cell pair configuration, wherein the fluid flow through the ion enrichment compartment is arranged in a substantially upward direction, and therefore, is generated in the ion enrichment compartment. Gas can be efficiently removed. |
